Statement on Attacks at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem

by Imam Earl Abdulmalik Mohammed

We are deeply troubled by what is permitted by those insisting on exercising nationalist interests at the sacred places in Jerusalem. We are no less disturbed by the sinful excesses of those illegitimately claiming Islamic life and identity in Afghanistan and Nigeria who target tender and innocent life. The sacred precinct at Jerusalem bears G’d’s “blessings and understandings of His Signs” for all people and thus the faith and humanity of the worshippers assembled at Al-Aqsa should be respected above other interests.

Civilized peoples everywhere know and recognize this principle irrespective of their Faith identity or national identity. Faith and the faithful can be made victims and also made to appear to be culprits by those who skillfully, deliberately, and expertly provoke tension and violence. A “Jerusalem Day” parade near the sacred area permitted by an expansionist Israeli regime is no more than intimidation tactics and the posturing of nationalist evil. Responses bartering the blood of sacred human lives are no better in the balance of just acts.

Further, we are not proud that an American embassy in Jerusalem does not serve the building of trust, and is not a truthful or honorable representative of the well-meaning Muslim-American citizens who want to see a deserved and supported Peace reflective of universal justice and the best of democratic ideals.

We ask G’d, Who is Highly Glorified and Praised, to strengthen and discipline the passions of Muslim and Palestinian victims, and to not allow their or our emotional nature to be made a tool against the just struggle that targets the schemes of oppressors. Such is the character of the ongoing struggle of our brothers and sisters in the occupied territories. And such is the nature of our Muslim-American enduring support for the Palestinian people and their just causes. Our prayer to G’d is for the preservation of innocent life and that the best human sentiments govern the moments ahead.
